During the course Universal Design for Interaction, I developed a strong interest in accessibility and universal design. The course provided me with in-depth knowledge of the seven principles of universal design, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CoRD), and gave me the opportunity to explore the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
As part of the course, we evaluated websites and applications using screen readers and keyboard navigation and ultimately redesigned a webpage that did not meet accessibility requirements.
During my internship at Coop, accessibility was a key focus, occupying 50% of my time, as Coop’s app and website needed improvements ahead of the EU directive coming into effect in 2025. I contributed to designing accessibility solutions, some of which have already been implemented on Coop’s website.
I would say that I have a solid understanding of how to create accessible design solutions, I am well-versed in WCAG, and I have hands-on experience testing designs using assistive technologies such as NVDA.
